I get this question a lot. Both breeds look beautiful in photos, both carry the word “doodle” in their name, and both are marketed as allergy-friendly family dogs. But they are not the same dog, and for most families choosing between them, the differences matter.

Here is what I know after years of raising and placing Australian Labradoodles, and what I tell every family who asks me to compare the two.

What Is a Cavapoo?

A Cavapoo is a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle. It is a first-generation or multi-generation hybrid. There is no single governing registry for Cavapoos, no standardized breeding protocol, and no formal health clearance requirements built into the breed’s infrastructure. Individual breeders may or may not test their breeding dogs. The coat, temperament, and size of any individual Cavapoo puppy depend entirely on which traits it inherits from each parent.

That unpredictability is not a flaw unique to Cavapoos. It is a characteristic of any designer hybrid that has not been developed through a structured multi-generational program.

What Is an Australian Labradoodle?

An Australian Labradoodle is a purpose-bred companion dog with a documented multi-generational lineage. The breed was developed in Australia in the late 1980s by Wally Conron at the Royal Guide Dogs Association of Australia to produce a guide dog suitable for people with allergies to dog hair and dander. The infusion of Labrador Retriever, Poodle, and Cocker Spaniel genetics was intentional and documented.

The two registries that maintain the breed standard today are the Australian Labradoodle Association of America (ALAA) and the World Australian Labradoodle Association (WALA). Both registries require that member breeders follow health testing protocols, maintain pedigree records, and adhere to a code of ethics. At Loving Labradoodles, we are members of both.

What this structure means in practice: when you buy an Australian Labradoodle from an ALAA or WALA breeder, you are buying a dog from a known lineage with documented health clearances on both sire and dam. You are not rolling the dice on what you will get.

Coat and Allergy Considerations

The Cavapoo coat can range from straight to wavy to curly, depending on which parent’s genetics dominate. Straight coats shed. Wavy coats often shed lightly. Curly coats are more likely to be low-shedding. There is no reliable way to predict which coat type a Cavapoo puppy will develop before it arrives in your home.

Australian Labradoodle coats are much more consistent across generations because the breed has been selectively developed for coat type over decades. Fleece coats, the most common type in well-bred Australian Labradoodles, are soft, low-to-non-shedding, and generally well-tolerated by people with mild to moderate allergies. Wool coats are tighter and even lower-shedding. Both coat types carry a distinct texture and structure you can assess in the puppy before you bring it home.

I want to be precise about something here. No dog is 100 percent hypoallergenic. Allergic reactions to dogs are triggered by a protein called Can f 1, which is found in dog saliva, urine, and skin cells, not just the coat. But a low-shedding dog in a clean environment significantly reduces the amount of allergen circulating in the air and on surfaces. Australian Labradoodles, with their predictable low-shedding coats, give allergy-sensitive families a better starting point than a hybrid whose coat type is unknown at the time of purchase.

Temperament and Trainability

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are gentle, people-oriented dogs. They are also known to be on the sensitive side, sometimes anxious when left alone, and prone to attachment behavior that can tip into separation distress. Poodles are brilliant, energetic, and highly trainable. A Cavapoo can fall anywhere on the spectrum between those two temperament profiles.

The Australian Labradoodle was developed with service and therapy work in mind. The combination of Labrador’s warmth and trainability, Poodle’s intelligence, and Cocker Spaniel’s attunement to people produced a dog that is intuitive, calm under stimulation, and genuinely easy to live with. These traits have been reinforced over multiple generations of intentional breeding.

At Loving Labradoodles, we run Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) and Early Scent Introduction (ESI) protocols beginning at day three of life. We do temperament evaluations before every puppy is matched to a family. We are looking for the qualities that make a dog thrive as a companion: confidence, curiosity, appropriate sociability, and resilience. That process is built into what we do, not added on.

The Health Question

This is where the comparison becomes most significant.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels carry a serious inherited cardiac condition called myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). According to veterinary cardiology research, more than 50 percent of Cavaliers develop MMVD by age five. By age ten, the prevalence approaches 100 percent. This is not a rare condition in the breed. It is expected.

When a Cavapoo inherits its Cavalier parent’s cardiac vulnerability, that risk comes along. Whether any individual Cavapoo puppy inherits that predisposition depends on genetics, and without a registry requiring cardiac clearances on breeding Cavaliers, there is no systematic way to reduce that risk across the population.

ALAA and WALA member breeders are required to health test breeding dogs. At Loving Labradoodles, our dams and sires are tested for hip and elbow structure, eye health, and DNA-based genetic conditions relevant to the breed before they enter our program. We do not breed dogs that have not cleared those evaluations.

Size

Cavapoos typically range from 10 to 25 pounds depending on whether a Toy or Miniature Poodle was used in the cross. Australian Labradoodles come in three sizes: Miniature (15 to 25 pounds), Medium (30 to 45 pounds), and Standard (50 to 65 pounds). If size matters to your family’s living situation, the Australian Labradoodle gives you a more defined range to choose from.

What the Right Choice Looks Like

A Cavapoo from a thoughtful, health-testing breeder can be a wonderful dog. I am not here to tell you otherwise. What I can tell you is what an Australian Labradoodle from a registry-affiliated breeding program offers that a hybrid without that structure does not: documented lineage, required health clearances, coat consistency, temperament that has been refined over generations, and a network of breeders who are accountable to a code of ethics.

If you are choosing a dog that will be with your family for 12 to 15 years, those differences compound. The puppy purchase price is a small fraction of the lifetime cost of owning a dog. Choosing a dog with a known health background and predictable temperament is not an indulgence. It is a practical decision.

At Loving Labradoodles, every puppy goes home with a health guarantee, a complete puppy packet, and our ongoing support. We match puppies to families deliberately, not randomly. And we are here after go-home day, not just before it.

If you want to learn more about how we breed and what our puppies are like, sign up for our newsletter at loving-labradoodle.kit.com/a3c15c494c. When we have a litter forming that fits your family, you will hear about it first.

If you are ready to tell us about your family, submit an interest form at lovinglabradoodles.com/puppy-application. That is the first step toward being matched with one of our puppies.
